Culture 1.1: The school implements and reviews an access and/or admissions policy that clearly describes the conditions for participation in the school’s programme(s). (0301-01-0100)

Culture 2: The school implements, communicates and regularly reviews an inclusion policy that creates cultures that support all students to reach their full potential. (0301-02)

Culture 3: The school implements, communicates and regularly reviews an academic integrity policy that creates cultures of ethical academic practice. (0301-03)

Culture 4: The school implements, communicates and regularly reviews a language policy that helps to foster intercultural understanding through communicating in a variety of ways in more than one language (0301-04)

Culture 5: The school implements, communicates and regularly reviews an assessment policy or policies to help create a culture of continuous learning and growth. (0301-05)

IB standards and practices, 2020

IB Policies are living guides that shape the practices and culture of a school. The policies are written based on the IB standards and practices and IB documentation. The true value of these policies lies in their meaningful implementation. In this blog, I will share with you some tips and ideas, I hope you will find them useful.

For candidate schools, the PYP emphasizes two essential policies: the Assessment Policy and the Language Policy. This expands to include Academic Integrity, Inclusion, and Admissions policies for authorized schools. Let me share some key points to consider when drafting these policies :

  • Consistency: Ensure coherence across all policies to avoid contradictions.
  • Conciseness: Policies should be clear and succinct, avoiding unnecessary complexity.
  • Structure: you can start all the policies with the school’s mission or learner profile if you want, and don’t forget to include a table of contents for easy navigation.
  • References: Use updated IB materials to ensure accuracy and relevance.
  • Revisions: Include publication and revision dates to track updates and maintain currency.
  • Alignment: If you are a continuum school, make sure the policies include all the programmes.

While tools like AI can draft policies efficiently, the real challenge lies in integrating them into daily school life. Policies are not just theoretical documents; they must resonate with and be understood by the entire school community.

Coordinators play a pivotal role in unpacking these policies with teachers. Here are some strategies to make this process engaging and impactful:

  1. Induction Week Activities: During induction, divide teachers into groups and assign each group a policy. Ask them to:
    • Read and analyse the policy.
    • Transform it into a visual representation, a song, or even a TV show skit.
    • Share their creations with the larger group to promote understanding and collaboration.
  2. Interactive Sessions: Use scenarios or case studies to explore how policies manifest in real-life situations.
  3. Continuous Engagement: Revisit policies throughout the year during team meetings to ensure ongoing relevance and understanding.
  4. All the team is involved: lewhat the team choose which policy committee they want to join, the committee will include teachers from all the programmes, and make sure each committee has an experienced leader

My final idea will be to look at the Approaches to Learning (ATLs) and the policies. By embedding ATLs into the policies, schools can create deeper connections for teachers and students:

  • Communication Skills: Link to the Language Policy to remind all the teachers that they are language teachers.
  • Research Skills: Integrate into the Academic Integrity Policy to foster ethical research practices.
  • Thinking Skills: Tie to the Assessment Policy to reflective thinking and metacognition.
  • Self-Management Skills: Connect to the Inclusion Policy to support organization and personal well-being.
  • Social Skills: Highlight in all policies to underscore collaboration and respect.

Collaboration is at the heart of crafting and implementing effective policies. By involving teachers, coordinators, and official IB consultant in the process, schools ensure that:

  • Policies are relevant and practical.
  • Teachers feel ownership and are more likely to implement policies effectively.
  • The school community speaks a common language, fostering consistency and alignment.

Writing and implementing PYP policies is not just a compliance task; it is an opportunity to shape a school’s culture and practices. By prioritizing collaboration and connecting policies to ATLs, schools can transform these documents into powerful tools for growth and learning.
